Type 648 Submarine Tender

To support its fast growing submarine fleet, the PLA Navy demanded a submarine repair ship in  October 1975. The design task was assigned to 708 Institute in Shanghai. The first and only hull of the Type 648 submarine tender was finally commissioned by the PLA Navy East Sea Fleet in 1985. The ship was designed to provide basic repair and maintenance for conventional submarines, and supply submarines with fuel, water. It can also recharge the batteries of the submarine.
